Earlier this year, New York State enacted legislation that bans the use of internet-enabled devices, including cell phones and smartwatches, during the instructional day from “bell-to-bell” in all public schools.
From the start of the school day, Unadilla Valley students may not use cell phones or other internet-enabled devices unless explicitly authorized by school personnel for educational or medical purposes. This includes during lunch, hallway transitions, and study halls. Devices should be turned off and stored securely in the manner authorized by the district. UV is continuing to work on its policy as we head toward the new school year.
As we further develop policies and procedures to ensure the district is in compliance with the law, we will communicate this out to you. Please expect additional information from our building administrators in early August.
As always, parents and caregivers may call the school to make contact with students and students may use designated landline school phones to call out. We know that this is a big change for students and families, and we are grateful for the feedback you have provided us along the way as we meet the new requirements under state law.
