UV Elementary creates its own Polar Express
Do you believe in the magic of the Polar Express? For the staff and students at Unadilla Valley Elementary School, the answer is a resounding “yes.”
During the last two weeks, students and staff have been busy creating their own polar express in the main hallway of the school. Each class has a “car” (made of paper and other materials) with a picture of each student. There’s also an engine for the conductor (elementary principal Chris Harper) and a car for teacher aides, custodians and other staff.
There’s even train “track” in the hallway.
The Polar Express was both a movie and a book. It’s centered on the story of a young hero boy on Christmas Eve who boards on a powerful magical train that's headed to the North Pole and Santa Claus's home.
The idea to create one in the school came from teacher aide Kathy Proskine.
“I just wanted to have a festive hallway and celebrate the holidays,” she said. “We wanted to do something nice for the kids and we have all been having a good time.
“Each day we add something new and a lot of the time, kids are looking for the pictures of their siblings on the other cars.”
