The New Berlin Rotary Club recently revived a tradition – donating dictionaries to elementary school students at Unadilla Valley Central School.
The club purchased 120 dictionaries and distributed 70 to third grade students at Unadilla Valley elementary school. The club also gave 50 to Amish students who live in the district.
“We had done it five or six years ago. This year we had a new member of the club who was willing to take it on again,” said Lynne Walton, treasurer of the New Berlin Rotary Club.
Walton said third grade students are at a great age to be recipients of gift dictionaries.
“They are getting used to the idea of a reference book so they are at that stage of just learning about dictionaries,” Walton said.
Walton also said that dictionaries still have value in the digital age and can help students realize they don’t have to be plugged into a device to learn.
Walton visited Unadilla Valley on Wednesday, Feb. 24 and talked with the third grade students about Rotary and community service.
