UV Starts Community-wide Book Study

If you are seeing "Charlotte’s Web'' related pictures around town, there is a good reason for it!

Unadilla Valley Elementary School is participating in the One School, One Book program. The entire school community is reading E.B. White’s classic "Charlotte’s Web.''

“Reading professionals recommend reading material out loud that is beyond a child’s own reading level,’’ Elementary Principal Christopher Harper said in a letter home to parents. “We also believe that you can and should continue to read chapter books with your older children, even when they are able to read by themselves. We have selected a title that can followed and understood and enjoyed by younger students, but will still captivate and stimulate older children.”

Students, parents, teachers, cafeteria staff, bus drivers and administrative staff are all reading "Charlotte’s Web,'' which is the story of the friendship between a pig named Wilbur and a barn spider named Charlotte. But it doesn’t end there.

People in the community are also reading "Charlotte’s Web'' and scenes and quotes from the book can be seen throughout New Berlin at places like Stewart’s, Preferred Mutual and New York Pizzeria.

Harper said the goal of the One School, One Book program is to have a community-wide discussion of "Charlotte’s Web'' in order to inspire a love of reading for all.

A reading schedule timeline was sent home with students that indicates when students will be exploring each chapter in school. Parents are encouraged to read with their children for 15 minutes a night in order to follow along with the book.
