Board of Education Adopts Proposed Budget Ahead of May 16 Vote

The Unadilla Valley Board of Education on Wednesday, April 19, adopted a proposed budget to put before voters on May 16.

The $19.3 million fiscal plan for 2017-18 has a tax levy increase of $52,654, or 1.25 percent, which meets the state-mandated tax levy limit. The proposed budget reflects a spending increase of $228,041, or 1.20 percent.

A .63 percent increase in state aid over the current year will allow the district to continue all academic programming, extracurricular activities and athletics. Because state aid for UV is not projected at the levels seen in recent years and contractual costs have risen, the district will not fill two positions being vacated by retirements.

The proposed budget aligns with UV’s goal in recent years of reducing reliance on reserves, something that district officials say is good for long-term financial health. The bulk of the spending increase in the fiscal plan includes contractual salary and employee benefit costs. Decreases in the budget are seen in the areas of tuition paid to send students to BOCES for special education and payments to the Teacher Retirement System.

The district continues to evaluate efficiencies in all areas of operation. A Secondary School English teaching position and an aide position being vacated through retirements will not be filled under this spending plan.
