UV Fifth Grade Girls Participate in Conference
Three Unadilla Valley fifth grade students participated in a conference at SUNY Oneonta over the weekend that focused on helping them get the most out of their futures.

The Women Helping Girls Make Choices is a free program for fifth and sixth-grade girls that attend school in the ONC BOCES and DCMO BOCES regions. The conference held Saturday, April 29, is a partnership also with the Secondary Education Department at SUNY Oneonta.

The girls were accompanied by Elementary Counselor Sheri Houck.

“The purpose of this conference was to help bring awareness to young girls about the different careers and job opportunities in our world today,” Houck said.

The goals of the Women Helping Girls Make Choices program are:
• To encourage young women to pursue higher level math and science by creating a link to real world careers;
• To introduce young women to mentors in non-traditional roles;
• To inspire self-sufficiency, independence and leadership development;
• To model career planning and decision making; and
• To provide positive peer interaction.
