Six UV Elementary Students Win Bikes Through Memorial Day Essay Contest
Six Unadilla Valley Elementary School students have new rides for this summer after they wrote award-winning compositions recognizing the importance of Memorial Day.

Each student was given a new bicycle and a helmet, which were provided to the district through generous donations.

Marilyn Neuland, a teacher’s aide who helped coordinate the essay contest, helped present the awards during Monday’s Morning Program. She said she read through all 229 essays from students in grades pre-K through fifth grade.

“They were fantastic,” Neuland said.

The names of the students were covered up on each entry, so judges would focus just on the merits. And judging so many great essays proved to be a challenge, said School Resource Office John Lowe, who served as a judge, along with Sgt. Marinelli and Trooper Bugyi from the New York State Police.

“I just want to say you did an outsdanding job, it was very difficult for us,” Lowe said.
The winners were Aurora Relyea, Chasen Conklin, Maggi Holbert, Xavier Brown, Killian Wood and Annie Rogers.

Two bikes were donated by Chobani. Two were donated by the district administrative team. Two were provided through Box Tops for Education.
The district is grateful for the support the essay contest received. All students did a great job.
