South New Berlin couple adopts class
A class of students holds booksCan you adopt a whole elementary school classroom?

Sure!

That’s what Cathy and Gary Smith of South New Berlin recently did for a third grade class at Unadilla Valley Elementary Schools. Teacher Melissa Osborne said the Smiths recently approached her and asked if they could adopt her class. The Smiths, whose own children had gone through the school system, asked Mrs. Osborne what the class needed. She suggested pens, pencils, erasers, highlighters, Mrs. Osborne recalled.

A bag full of those items was delivered.

But then the Smiths asked if they could do something more.

“Students have weekly reading assignments, and some of my students said they do not have books at home,” Osborne said.
One thing led to another and the Smiths were soon brought into the classroom’s Scholastic books program and purchased 44 books for her 22 students.

The books arrived on Oct. 9 and the students got to see them for the first time, Osborne said.

There are now enough books to keep the class reading for a while.

But the Smiths don’t want it to end there, Osborne said.

In addition to potentially purchasing another round of books later in the year, Cathy Smith indicated that she wanted to help coordinated an effort to have community members adopt more classes at the Elementary School.
