Board of Education makes administrative appointments; new hires
The Unadilla Valley CSD Board of Education on Thursday approved a series of appointments to fill vacancies and complete a reorganization of the district’s administrative team.

The changes will help position the district to better meet state mandates and serve the academic and socio-emotional needs of students. They will also ensure the district’s ECHO program continues to bolster the range of college courses available to UV’s students.

Former Elementary Principal Chris Harper left the district in July to become the superintendent of Mayfield CSD, while former ECHO Director Julia Wick, left the district in June after a successful launch of the grant-funded early college high school program. Brenton Taylor, who was hired as secondary principal/director of curriculum and instruction in 2017, was appointed by the board last month as deputy superintendent. As deputy superintendent, Taylor will retain the duties he held related to curriculum and instruction and assume new duties related to the day-to-day management of the district.

To fill vacancies in the elementary principal, secondary principal and ECHO director roles, the following appointments were made by the board of education:

Kathleen Hansen will be the new elementary principal. She most recently served as the assistant superintendent of curriculum and staff development at Norwich City School District.

Stephanie Cooper was hired as a dean of students to provide student support and help the district better deal with student disciplinary matters.
Cooper was appointed with the title of "English teacher on special assignment" while her administrative certifications receive final approval from the state. She will not be teaching any classes. Cooper most recently worked at Rome Free Academy as an administrative intern, and is a former language and literature instructor.

Kimberly Murray will be ECHO director/secondary principal. Murray is a familiar face at Unadilla Valley, having served on the school board for four years. Murray resigned from the board effective July 25 and was not involved with the search committee or hiring process. She comes to the UV administrative team from Morris CSD, where she served as the director of pupil personnel.

“While we will have new people, new roles and new titles at UV, the goal remains the same – to provide the best academic programming, student support and professional development that we can in the safest environment possible. The changes approved by the Board of Education will also help the district provide a stable foundation as we move into the future, ensuring that our staff and students’ needs are met for years to come,” Superintendent Robert Mackey said.

In addition, there were several appointments for faculty and support staff. They include:
• Jennifer Hodge, senior typist in the guidance office
• Rachael Perry, typist in the special education office
• Doug Scoville-Upham, special education teacher
• Susan Thomas, special education teacher
• Ilene Tyler, school psychologist (appointed on July 8)

“We would like to welcome all of our new administrators, faculty and staff as we look forward to a fresh, energetic start to the new school year,” Mr. Mackey said.
