Two UV students to compete on area robotics team
Unadilla Valley will have two students competing on a legacy robotics team in March.

Senior Victoria Bullen and junior Deegan Chase are among the dozen members of Team T-Rx 145, which also features students from Norwich, Sherburne-Earlville and Gilbertsville-Mt. Upton. Team T-Rx 145 is heading to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute from March 7 to March 9 and SUNY Polytechnic Institute from March 14 to March 16 to compete in FIRST Robotics events.

The FIRST Robotics team to which the UV students belong was launched in the late 1990s. Tech teacher Will Rexroat began advising for the club when he joined the UV faculty, and each year he recruits students to participate.
The team has been prepping for the competitions for weeks.

“It’s a huge time commitment, we meet six days a week,” Rexroat said.

But with a trip to the FIRST Robotics championship round in Detroit on the line, competition is what it’s all about. That’s just fine for Victoria Bullen.

“I’m a very competitive person and a long-range planner,” Bullen said, during one of Mr. Rexroat’s recent classes.  Bullen said she wasn’t sure what to expect when she joined Team T-Rx 145.

“It’s my first year doing it, and honestly, I wasn’t sure I would have enjoyed it as much as I do,” she said.

Her favorite takeaway from the team has been the focus on seeing the full evolution of an idea from concept, to design, to production and finally competition.

Bullen is planning to study bio-chemical engineering and pre-law when she heads to college next fall.
