Board of Education election set for May 21
In addition to deciding on the 2019-20 school budget, voters will select three Board of Education members on May 21. There are three incumbents running for re-election—Tammie Emrich, Kimberly Murray and Kristin Rumovicz. Kimberly Corcoran is challenging the incumbents.

The seat held by Murray, who was appointed last year to fill a vacancy, is a one-year term subject to immediate appointment by the Board of Education following the election. The other terms are for three years, and the positions are unpaid.

Tammie Emrich
What is your personal background?
I have lived in the Unadilla Valley Central School District since 1995.  My husband, Allen, and I live in Columbus with our two boys.  Dylan is a 2015 UV graduate and Drew is currently a Freshman.

What experience can you bring to the school board?
I have worked at NYCM Insurance for over 25 years.  I participate in the annual Adopt-A-Highway Cleanup event, volunteered as a judge for the 2019 FFA Sub-State Career Development Event hosted by UV, volunteered to chaperone the 2018 After prom party and attend numerous extracurricular activities and athletic events to support our Unadilla Valley students. I was a volunteer on the New Berlin Youth Days committee for nine years and assisted the Unadilla Valley Youth Baseball and Softball League with their fund-raising efforts by managing the homerun fence banners.

Why are you running for the school board?
I am seeking a third term as a member of the Unadilla Valley Board of Education.  I have attended multiple workshops and retreats and would like the opportunity to continue to collaborate as a member of the Board to provide continuous financially responsible support for the growth of our students.

What is your personal background?
I have close personal ties to the local area.  My family has lived in the Norwich and South New Berlin areas for generations.  My mother and her six siblings were all graduates of South New Berlin.  I was born and raised in Norwich and returned to the area after completing college in 1997.
I have lived in the UV school district with my family for 20 years.  I have a stepdaughter who graduated from UV and a fourteen-year-old son who is currently in the eighth grade at UV.

What experience can you bring to the school board?
I have worked as a school-based Speech Therapist for twenty years and as the Director of Pupil Personnel for a neighboring school district for the past two years.  I bring a vast array of educational knowledge, training, and experience to the school board position.
Having served on the board I understand the mission, vision, and goals of the district and how resources have been aligned to support district initiatives.

Why are you running for the school board?
I would like to use my professional knowledge and experience as an educator to benefit my local community and school district.  As a parent and taxpayer, I  understand the local issues impacting our children and district.   I would like an opportunity to serve again as a school board member for Unadilla Valley so that I can continue to support children, families and my community

What is your personal background?
I am a lifetime resident of the Unadilla Valley Central School.  My husband and I are both graduates of UVCS and we have two boys who attend UVCS for their education.  Will is 14 years old and in 8th grade and Nate is 12 years old and in the 7th grade.  My mom is a retired UVCS school teacher and my dad served on the UVCS school board at the time of the merger.  I have an associate’s degree from Morrisville and a bachelor’s degree Cornell University. I am currently employed at USDA Farm Service Agency in Cooperstown, NY where I am a program technician and outreach coordinator. I am very active in youth activities, being the organizational leader of Storm Family 4-H Club, the youth advisor of the Chenango County Holstein Club and a previous youth soccer coach.

What experience can you bring to the school board?
I have been on the Board of Education for the past 8 years and served in a leadership position for 5 years. We have worked on balancing the budget with minimal increases to our tax payers while increasing revenue from grant sources to create new programs and opportunities for our students. As a board member I have attended multiple professional development conferences to always be improving and learning how to be a better board member. I have even been able to speak at the New York State School Board Convention to share some of the experiences we have as a rural district and working on our communication strategies. In the time I have been on the board we began using Capital Region BOCES Communication Services that has updated our website, covered newsworthy stories, and worked on creating better ways to communicate with our ever-changing community members’ needs.

Why are you running for the school board?
I want to be involved in making sure our school district provides the best education that we can for our community’s children.  We need to balance the needs of our students with the restraints that come with any organization operating within a budget.  We have the opportunity to ensure our children get a quality, well rounded education that will make them successful wherever their individual paths may take them.  I feel that I will be a good board member because I listen well; I can understand many sides of issues and truly want the best for all students that graduate from our school district.  Our school is a great community resource and working within our community to help our district reach its potential is something I am passionate about.

Kimberly Corcoran
What is your personal background?
I have worked as a Food Service Director for DCMO BOCES for almost 30 years.  I live with John Bice, Bice Trucking on Rt. 8 in New Berlin and enjoy his grandchildren as well as many friends and family in the area.

What experience can you bring to the school board?
My job has given me the opportunity to work with 12 districts in 28 locations.  I have worked with many building projects, budget, program development, staffing, grants and farm to school efforts.  I feel I could be an asset.

Why are you running for the school board?
I have experience in many parts of the school environment and could share ideas from other programs to help the district.  I was previously on the Fair Board in Otsego County and enjoyed the work and feel I have time now to contribute to the school board.
