Student Attendance is a Key for Success

Student attendance is a vital component for academic success. On one hand, that’s a no-brainer. But on the other hand, it can be sometimes misunderstood just how much a student can be set back by even one missed day.

Students who attend school regularly are able to learn more, have fewer discipline problems, develop better study habits and often are more successful than students who not. Missing just one day of instruction can adversely affect student learning – and this is especially true for children who come from families in need because they are less likely to have the resources necessary to make up for the loss of class time.

Unadilla Valley Central School recognizes the importance of good attendance and has a strict attendance policy with concrete steps and repercussions for excessive and/or unexcused absences. These steps can include home visits.

Attendance may sometimes be erroneously construed to be more important at the higher grade levels. However, research shows poor attendance has negative effects at every grade level. For example, kindergarten students who are chronically absent have a 61 percent chance of being held back for reading below grade level in third grade, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. Just two missed days a month can put students at risk for academic failure.

Nationally, one in 10 kindergarten and first-grade students miss nearly a month of school each year and this can hurt them for a lifetime.

Unadilla Valley Central School has an effective, proactive attendance policy. But our goal is to see 100 percent of our students succeed. Good attendance is vital for the success of all students.
