New School Resource Officer is on Duty

New Berlin Police Officer John Lowe is the new school resource officer at Unadilla Valley.

There is a new school resource officer on duty at Unadilla Valley Central School.

New Berlin Police Officer John Lowe, whose office is just inside the main entrance, said working at a school is a little different than being out on the road. A veteran of two decades in law enforcement, this is his first time working in a school district.

“It's been a nice transition. The school staff and students have made me feel at home here,” he said.

Lowe said he’ll be working from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on school days.

Lowe said the school takes a very proactive approach to ensure small problems don’t become big problems. That’s something that is very in tune with the strategy of many law enforcement officers when it comes to crime prevention.

“As for behavior-type issues, getting right to the heart of the problem and not letting the situation build into something worse is the right approach to conflict resolution,” Lowe said.

Lowe will work closely with guidance counselors and teachers in order to help provide support for students who might be at risk in terms of behavioral issues. In addition, his presence within the school’s halls will help curb bullying and increase the security and safety of the school.

The school resource officer position was created in 2013 through a joint effort by the town, the New Berlin Police Department and the school.

Officer Michael Hilla recently left the New Berlin Police Department for a position closer to his home.
