UV senior creates website dedicated to history of New Berlin schools
Interested in the history of the New Berlin and South New Berlin schools?

Well, thanks to the work of Unadilla Valley senior Stefan Foster, that history will now be preserved forever.

Foster went into the UV library last year and saw some shelves lined with documents and photo albums of the New Berlin and South New Berlin schools dating back to the late 1800s. He knew those photos and documents would someday fade, so he looked for a way to preserve them.

About 80 hours of volunteer work later, Foster created “Roots of the Storm,” (http://rootsofthestorm.weebly.com/) a historical database/website packed with about 1,200 pictures, ledgers, records, maps and other documents spanning more than 100 years of history.

Foster said he and teacher aide Wilma Gorrell, was looking for ways to organize all the documents, and she suggested inventorying them all.

“I’m really into local history, so she thought I could work with all the old records and pictures. I thought instead of just organizing them, we are in the age of archiving them putting them into a database,” he said.

“I just feel relieved because anytime I see a lot of old local history sitting and it hasn’t been documented or achieved, I’m afraid it will be lost. Now, it’s finally in a database.”

Foster said he found plenty of interesting items. Most notably, he found a journal from 1936 from the building of a school in New Berlin.

“It was a day-to-day journal,” he said. “They wrote down the weather, who was working, and took pictures.”
