Learning continues throughout the summer at Unadilla Valley
Just because summer is in full swing doesn’t mean that students at Unadilla Valley aren’t preparing for the new school year and beyond.

About 30 students in pre-K through grade six currently participate in a four-week summer school program focused on reinforcing academic skills and building new ones. Based on area of need, students are getting an overview of lessons in English language arts (ELA) and math.

“We want to establish a strong foundation for learning,” said elementary principal Chris Harper.

“We are reinforcing skills such as grammar, phonics, fluency, spelling, vocabulary, reading comprehension, the writing process and more.”

Mr. Harper said even early on, teachers in the district focus on preparing students for college and careers. He said in regard to math, students work on number theory, order of operations, word problems, measurements, and basic geometric shapes.

“The summer programs allow students to move through these activities at their own pace so they can work at a pace they’re comfortable with,” Mr. Harper said.

“We’re trying to create a ‘can do’ attitude.”
