about the district
Welcome new Unadilla Valley special education teacher Stefanie Cornnell
New Unadilla Valley special education teacher Stefanie Cornnell loves the idea of working in a small community and a district where everyone seems to know each other. A native of Edmeston, she’s happy to be teaching so close to home.

She comes to the district after earning a master’s degree in biology and students with disabilities, and student teaching at Proctor last year.

We caught up with her to some questions to get to know her better:

Q. Why did you want to become a special education teacher?
A. My mom is a teacher and ever since I was little, I tried to help her. As I went through college and worked with different groups on campus, I realized I really liked teaching. It all came together nicely. I just love being able to work with the kids and helping them. Special education gives me an opportunity to teach everything.

Q. What’s your teaching style like?
A. I’m very hands-on. I love doing hands-on lessons so students can make a connection to what we’re learning to real life situations. It can be as simple as them working in pairs and pasting something together.

Q. What’s the most rewarding part of being a teacher?
A. When they actually make a connection to what we’re talking about. Or when a student is struggling with a topic and you keep working with them and you can see them improve their skills.

Q. What’s your classroom like?
A. It has a little bit of everything. I teach all the subjects, so I try to incorporate all of that. There’s open space too because I love displaying their work and the good things they do. It’s good for them to see it on the wall. It’s a very positive atmosphere.

Q. What is special about UV to you?
A. It’s close to home, and my brothers are seniors here and I can go to their events. I’m used to the small community, and I really like that.
