Meet new UV English teacher Michael Farnach
New Unadilla Valley English Michael Farnach speaks fondly about the teachers that helped mold him into the person he is. He remembers how they helped him in school and now he wants show his gratitude by helping students at UV. He comes to the district to teach grades 6 and 8 after earning a bachelor’s degree in education and English from SUNY Oswego.

We asked him some questions to get to know him better:

Q. Why did you want to become a teacher?
A. There are a lot of reasons. One, when I was in school I wasn’t exactly the top in my class, but I had a lot of teachers who worked with me and put in a lot of time and effort and get through some difficult parts of my life. I also knew I wanted to do something to help people. I thought about being a teacher, but as I got more and more into undergrad classes, it solidified for me that teaching was my passion.

Q. Why English?
A. My English teachers were the ones I admired the most. I always liked to read and enjoyed writing, and I liked what we did in class with that.

Q. What’s your teaching style like?
A. Unique. I like to tell stories. It helps engage the kids and make those connections with them. I will tell them about when I was young. I call it “fun with a purpose.” When I can, I like to make it that way because they really respond well to it.

Q. What will your kids learn this year?
A. How to structure paragraphs and craft written responses. We’ll focus on spelling, grammar and punctuation; and how to find good evidence to support an argument. We’ll also be reading Inside Out and Back Again and To Kill a Mockingbird.

Q. Why did you want to come to UV?
A. For a few reasons: It’s a very nice community; and when I was student teaching, I worked in more rural areas, and what they lacked in material resources they more than made up in community. They have a great community here. They have done so much to help me, and are so kind.

Q. What do you want people to know about you?
A. I work hard and because I work hard, I expect my students to work hard as well.
