Grant Win Helps Library Build Makerspace

The school library team applied for a grant last fall from DCMO BOCES School Library System to help establish the Makerspace program. After receiving the $1,000 grant, the team has been working on getting the Makerspace ready to begin operation. The Makerspace is located in a sunny alcove at the back of the Elementary Library.

The mission of the Unadilla Valley Makerspace is to foster creativity, diversity and critical thinking in a safe and nurturing environment by empowering learners to follow their sense of wonder.

A Makerspace is a collaborative shared workspace, typically located in a school, library or other public building that provides materials, tools and equipment for innovative, creative thinkers.

Renee Collum at the Elementary Library said the Makerspace concept is designed to complement the focus on STEM at the Secondary School. STEM means Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.

An example of this is that the Makerspace is equipped with some beginner robotics kits, which will help familiarize students with robotics, which is taught at the Secondary School.

Collum said it is exciting to be able to bring the Makerspace to life at UV this spring.

“For this school year, students will be using it during recess time and it will only be for third, fourth and fifth grades,’’ Collum said. “What we hope to do for next year is have it as an after-school program and open it to all grade levels.”
