UV Plans an Enriching Staycation to Compensate for Used Emergency Days

The effects of Winter Storm Stella, which resulted in record snowfall and the use of two emergency days at Unadilla Valley Central School District, continues to impact our school calendar.

Other weather events this winter also led to hazardous road conditions, meaning the district has exhausted its allotment of six emergency days.

The District unfortunately must draw from Spring Recess in order to ensure we fulfill the state-mandated 180-day school calendar by protecting against any other unforeseen weather conditions or other events that could cause additional closures in the remaining three months of the school year. The district will take two days, Monday, April 10, and Tuesday, April 11, as regular school days. The Board of Education voted to approve the calendar change on March 20.

State Education law requires school districts that exceed their allotment of emergency days to draw first from vacation days and then from holidays if additional emergency days are needed. If the district were to use an additional emergency day or days without taking from the Spring Recess, it would be forced to hold school on Memorial Day before considering other options, which include holding classes on weekends. Districts that fail to abide by the required number of school days face the loss of significant state aid.

This is the best option to ensure we have an emergency-day buffer to protect the district from any unforeseen events.

The two days being taken from Spring Recess will allow the district to have a UV Enriching Staycation.

Because we recognize this is a burden on faculty, staff, students and families during a traditional vacation period, we are organizing two days of fun, authentic learning, which will include special events and guests, virtual and physical field trips and other activities.

The activities will complement and enhance the academic work currently underway at Unadilla Valley, but which go beyond typical instructional days. All of the learning will support and strengthen the skills and critical content knowledge for each grade level in science, social studies, English language arts and/or math. We recognize that some families may have made plans many months ago. If your child will be out on either or both of those two days, please follow standard school district policy on student absences. Because of the nature of the activities and the possibility some students may miss these days due to family plans, there will be no homework or tests during the UV Enriching Staycation.

We apologize for the inconvenience this could cause families, but this is the best option to protect the remainder of the school calendar year and give our students opportunities to optimize their academic success. Please see the chart below for a listing of activities for the UV Enriching Staycation.
