Spelling Bee

A spelling bee to determine Unadilla Valley’s representative at a regional spelling competition in March was held Thursday in the Middle/High School Library.

With nearly three dozen sixth and seventh graders participating, the competition featured elimination rounds that eventually left one students standing – Xander Jones.

The first round featured words like platoon, rattler and shoehorn. The second round had words like tropical, median and hoity-toity. The later round, whittled down to a dozen students, had words like paragon, casserole and enunciate.

The final found saw Xander Jones spell “billiards” correctly to win the competition and advance to the regionals.

The regional competition typically has 20 to 25 students participating, each representing one school. It will be held March 5 at SUNY Oneonta.

Unadilla Valley has been sending students to the regional spelling bee for about a decade.

Zander Jones spells the winning word at Thursday's Spelling Bee - Billiards.
