UV senior helps coordinate Parkland memorial event
A Unadilla Valley high school senior organized an event to memorialize the 17 victims of the tragedy in Parkland, Fla. said he feels it was helpful for everyone.

The event was optional, but nearly all high school students attended.

“My goal was to bring the school together to talk about how we can prevent violence from happening at our school, what future steps we can take and to just remember the Florida victims,” said Colby Moore, who is also the student council president.

The event featured a video that showed the 17 victims of the Parkland tragedy and a 17-second moment of silence was observed for each. They then had a round-table-type discussion.

Moore said the event was intended to be unbiased and apolitical.

“I had a lot of kids I didn’t expect come up to me at the end and shake my hand,” Moore said.

One of the big takeaways from the event, he said, is that many of the students agreed that communication with each other and being respectful to each other is vitally important.

“It’s a step in the right direction,” he said.

Moore is planning to study culinary arts at Paul Smiths College in the fall.
