FILLS Program Seeks to Give Youngest Learners and their Families a Boost
A new early learning program for children and their families/caregivers is set to launch next month.

The Families into Literacy and Learning Succeed, or FILLS, program will serve children from ages 0 to 3. It will run from Oct. 12 through May 25, 2018 and be based in the kindergarten and pre-kindergarten wing at Unadilla Valley Elementary School. At this time, a morning session is scheduled. However, district administrators may expand to an afternoon session.

The FILLS morning session will run from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday and will follow the district calendar. Participants have 15 minutes to put away belongings, socialize, and play before the start of the class. If there are enough participants, the district will offer an afternoon session from 12:15 p.m. to 2:15 p.m.

The program is funded through the state's Community Schools program.  A pilot version of the program ran last year and served several families. This year the program is expanded.

The FILLS program is self-transport for individual families and bus-transport for day-care providers; enrolled children must be accompanied every day by a parent or caregiver. FILLS promotes intergenerational interaction and learning. Participating children and their adult partners work together on activities that encourage foundational literacy skills through stories, play, crafts, music, and movement. All children ages 0 to 3 may attend, including siblings and other day-care participants.

Speech, occupational, and physical therapists will co-plan student activities, and participating children and their families may access the School Based Health Clinic when registered.

Snacks will be provided by the school district throughout the entire program. However, during holidays and birthdays participant families may provide a snack if you would like. I will provide a monthly newsletter that will include all the important events for the month.

To enroll in FILLS stop by the Elementary School or fill out and return the form below.
