seven students stand next to an adult advisorSeven Unadilla Valley high school students are in Detroit this week to compete in the FIRST Robotics Northeast Championships.

The UV students, coached by technology teacher William Rexroat, are part of a regional team of 36 students from four schools. Other schools sending students include Norwich, Sherburne-Earlville and Gilbertsville-Mt. Upton.

This is the team’s first appearance at a National FIRST Robotics event in 15 years.

UV student’s include Deegan Chase, Paul Corgnell, Bayliegh Davis, Oliver Kuhn, Harley Madden, Evan Wesolowski and Gabriel Wood.

The students initially did not qualify for the Northeast Championships at a preliminary event, but are able to attend due to their high position on a waitlist. The students are paying for the trip through fundraising, grants, sponsorships and donations from area businesses and organizations.

Thursday,  April 26, marked their first day of competition.

Rexroat said that so far, the UV students have gone to corporate displays , including Ford and Domino’s self-driving pizza delivery car and virtual reality demos, as well as attended seminars on resume writing, programming strategies and young entrepreneurship.

Good luck students!
