UV fourth grader racks up golf tournament wins including Junior Masters
Bailey Shoemaker’s goal it so someday play on the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) tour.

And it’s not just wishful thinking either, because the nine-year-old Unadilla Valley fourth grader has already won the 2014 Junior Masters Championship (the 9-10 age group) in Georgia and 2014 European Championship. She even has the green jacket to prove it.

“When I was real little, I watched my father play golf and I started from there,” she said. “I just love everything about it.”

Shoemaker picked up a club at age four and played in her first tournament at age seven. She practices about an hour every day after school at Red Pines in Edmeston, and so far, she’s competed in about 20 tournaments and won a few. She has golfed around the state, and during the year plays in the Mohawk Valley Junior Golf Tour.

She says winning the European Championship in Scotland meant a lot to her because her family was there to watch.

“My mother and father were there, and my grandfather and grandmother who live in England came to see me too,” she said.

“It was also fun to play with my friends.”

Shoemaker doesn’t point to one part of her golf game being better than another. She calls herself “well rounded” and feels that being a good golfer requires a love for the game, and of course, desire.

“If you have desire, even with a bad swing you can play good golf,” she said.

Her goals for the near future are to continue to practice so she can get into a “good college with a good golf team.”

“Then, I will try to get into the LPGA,” she said.
