"I have this theory that if one person can go out of their way to show compassion, then it will start a chain reaction of the same. People will never know how far a little kindness can go," wrote a Colorado high school junior in a school essay nearly 11 years ago imploring readers to spread benevolence since "you just may start a chain reaction."

Rachel Scott wrote that just a month before she was shot to death while eating lunch outside of Columbine High School.

Scott was the first person of 13 killed and 24 injured at the Columbine High School massacre on April 20, 1999.
