About The Community
The Unadilla Valley Central School is centered on two communities situated along State Route 8 that are six miles apart: the village of New Berlin and the hamlet of South New Berlin. These rural communities are located south of Utica, west of Oneonta and east of Norwich, N.Y.
While agriculture remains the primary employer in the district, several small industries, including a mutual insurance company, a nationally acclaimed nursing home and an international artist manufacturing company are located within the school district. The cities of Norwich, Sidney and Oneonta also provide employment for many of the district residents.
The area is noted for its outdoor recreational opportunities, including hunting, fishing and camping. There is a nine-hole golf course in the district - as well as bowling lanes. Area ski slopes are within an hour's drive. There also are several quality riding stables within a 24-mile radius. Major shopping centers are within an hour's drive in Utica, Binghamton, Oneonta and Syracuse. Excellent restaurants are located in the district and nearby in Leonardsville, Guilford, Norwich and Hamilton. Cultural and educational opportunities which are in proximity to the district include SUNY Morrisville in Norwich and Morrisville, SUNY Delhi, Hamilton College, the State University at Oneonta, Hartwick College, Colgate University, Utica College and Syracuse University. The school runs many programs in conjunction with these institutions of higher learning. Museums in the area include a nationally renowned car museum, a railroad museum and a local history museum in Norwich, the Soccer Hall of Fame in Oneonta and the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. Also, there is an active arts community coordinated by the Chenango County Council of the Arts and the New Berlin Art Forum. World class artists perform regularly at the Stanley Theatre in Utica and the Forum in Binghamton.
Milford Academy (a prep school for colleges since 1906) purchased Unadilla Valley's former high school building and moved from Connecticut to New Berlin in November of 2003. The academy is a private prep school for athletes interested in bolstering their academic achievements.
Chase Memorial Nursing Home runs a local health care facility in New Berlin and Chenango Memorial Hospital of Norwich has an on-site clinic within the school district for students. Major hospitals are located in Cooperstown and Oneonta.
