What are the Common Core State Standards?
According to the New York State Education Department, the Common Core State Standards Initiative was a joint effort by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices and the Council of Chief State School Officers in partnership with Achieve, ACT, and the College Board.

Through this initiative, governors and state commissioners of education from across the country committed to joining a state-led process to develop a common core of state standards in English language arts (ELA) and mathematics for grades K-12.

One of the main goals was to develop a “common core of standards that are internationally benchmarked, aligned with work and post-secondary education expectations, and inclusive of the higher order skills that students need…”

Shifts for students and parents:
According to the website EngageNY.org, a critical component of a student’s success in school is dependent on what and how they learn at home. EngageNY.org provides a practical guide with steps that parents can take to improve their child’s learning of the Common Core. To download the guide, click here.

Parent guides:
To help parents with the Common Core shifts, the National Parent Teacher Association created the Parents' Guide to Student Success. There are versions for kindergarten through eighth grade and two total for ninth grade to 12th grade (one for English language arts/literacy and one for mathematics).
